Liturgy and Spiritual Life

Bereavement Ministry: Assists pastor, family and friends in the planning of the Funeral Mass and Wake Service, and helps with the coordination of the Mercy Meal to follow the Mass or grave side services.  Mary Morman, 740-522-1639, Carolyn Vacca, 323-0260, and Jan Smith, 740-522-7990.

Deaf & Disabilities Ministry: Helps make mass, religious education, and parish life accessible to all who seek a relationship with God, including ASL interpretation for Sunday mass, as well as parish activities upon request, and special needs accommodations for our PSR program. Art & Environment Committee:  Coordinates the decoration of the church for the liturgical seasons.  If you would like to offer support of flowers and plants for the church, contact the office at 740 522-5270.

Focolare: Meets on the first Thursday at 7:30pm for discussions on spirituality and dinner: Yvette and Ed Cicale, 740-522-2712.

Dulcimer Prayer Group:   This group, led by Fr. Bill Hritsko, meets weekly on Thursday evenings at 7:00pm alternating locations between St. Leonard’s (2n d & 4th) and our sister parish Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Buckeye Lake (1st & 3rd).  It uses the dulcimer, a simple “gateway” instrument, as means of bringing music in one’s prayer life.  Musical ability is not required as the emphasis is on prayer with music.  Using simple melodies and hymns we pray by making a joyful sound unto the Lord.  All instruments are welcome and dulcimers are available for loan as needed.  For further information, contact the parish office at 740-522-5270 or OLMC at 740-928-3266.

Music Ministry:  The music ministry provides music for liturgical celebrations including Holy days and weekend Masses.  Parishioners can participate as cantors, instrumentalists, or in one of the handbell choirs, Children’s Choir as well as a seasonal adult choir for the Advent/Christmas, and the Lent/Easter seasons.  Contact Peggy Pound for more information about becoming a part of this vital ministry of the church at 740-522-5270 or at peggyounce@gmail.com.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): Faith sharing group and teaching on Tuesday nights leading to entrance into the Church at the Easter Vigil. This is a combined program with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Call the church office for more information at (740)522-5270.

Sacrament of Baptism, children: See the Priest.

Sacrament of Confirmation: every 2 to 3 years. See the Priest.

Sacrament of Marriage: See the Priest. Please count on a 6-month preparation period for counseling, testing and paper work.

Servers: Children and adults serve the weekend Masses.   Scheduler –  Maryann Chisek at 587-3438. Volunteers needed.

Ushers: At weekend Masses. They take up collection, seat people and provide the Parish Bulletin. Youths and adults.

 

Education

Anthony Di Giandomenico Educational Fund Award: Two $1,000 scholarships per year to high school seniors (boy and girl) for college or tech school. Chair – Steven Connor, 740-522-6410.

Catholic Education: The number of children attending catholic schools in the area are the following: Blessed Sacrament (Newark): 10; St. Francis de Sales School(Newark): 9; Bishop Fenwick (Zanesville): 2; Newark Catholic High School (Newark) 9. Those interested in attending Catholic Schools needs to be approved by the Pastor.

Library: Print and Video. Located in the Reconciliation room in the Church.

Parish School of Religion: The PSR classes for the school year 2014/15 will be meeting after the 9:30a.m. Mass on Sundays from 10:30 – 12:00. For more information contact our PSR Director Allison Shardell at (740)405-8892.

Vacation Bible School: VBS meets in the summer for one week for children Pre-K- 3rd grade. They meet in the evening from 6:30- 8:30p.m. Volunteers including Adults and Teens help make this a success. For more information contact the PSR Director, Allison Shardell – (740)405-8892.

 

Community Life

Church Dusters: Teams clean church, usually late in the week. Peggy Pound 740-522-5270.

Christmas Concert: Saint Leonard Choirs and John Sheets String students give a Christmas Concert on the 2nd Sunday of December each year at 2:00p.m. A free-will offering is taken to help a charity.

Corporate Communion: The Knights of Columbus, Council #12641, with spouses, attend a weekend Mass quarterly. The knights come together to show their unity in support of the Church and the parish..

Fish Bakes: During the Friday’s of Lent, the St. Leonard Knights of Columbus Council 12641 have Fish Bakes from 5-7p.m. Proceeds from the Fish Bakes go to charities. Volunteers are needed to make desserts and help the Knights during these dinners. Contact Ron Jones – (740) 522-4875.

Interfaith Dinner at Thanksgiving: On Monday of Thanksgiving week, a potluck followed by a religious service is rotated among Christ Lutheran Church, Heath United Methodist Church, and St. Leonard Catholic Church.

Measure Up Campaign: Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, the Campaign is a fundraiser for a selected charity, the ARC (Association of Retarded Citizens) of Licking County.

PSR/Parish Picnic: There is a PSR/Parish Picnic in the Fall. Everyone should bring a covered dish to share. Church provides meat and beverages & games.

Knox/Licking Vocation Club: The club supports vocations to the priesthood, religious life and diaconate.  Monthly luncheon meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 12:00 Noon in the St. Leonard Social Hall. Social Concerns

Blood Pressure: Taken after the Masses, the first Sunday of the month by volunteer parish nurses. If would like to help with this contact Mary Morman at 522-1639.

Greeting Cards: Sends get-well cards from the parish to the homebound and the sick. Kendra Aber 740-349-9379.

Nursing Home Visitors:

  • Mass on first Tuesday: 10:30 a.m., Chapel Grove Inn. Communion and visitation. On the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Tuesdays there will be communion and rosary.

Saint Vincent de Paul: St. Leonard Conference – helps the poor of the Parish and community. Helpline – 349-0989 and also the St. Leonard St. Vincent de Paul contact line is 740-522-8242.

Visitation of Home Bound and Sick: There are four teams of Eucharistic Ministers that visit the homebound.
